TRANSGENDER PERMANENT HAIR REMOVAL

Transgender woman with beautiful brown curly hair

Large volume electrolysis is a procedure for removing hair. This procedure is common among transgender individuals — transgender facial hair removal is a gender-affirming procedure that can make you feel more comfortable in your body and bring your inner beauty to life.

Here, you can learn more about electrolysis, what to expect during the procedure and request a free consultation and estimate.

What Is Large Volume Electrolysis?

Large volume electrolysis is a common facial hair removal treatment for transgender people and is particularly beneficial for transgender women. It’s helpful for attaining the smooth, sophisticated, hair-free look you desire. Furthermore, it is the only permanent solution for hair removal approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This procedure uses a probe and direct electric or shortwave radio current to damage the hair follicles. Our electrolysis protocol offers a painless way for transgender females to get rid of facial hair via numbing injections and sedation. A large volume electrolysis series is typically four to six sessions, and you can opt for two technicians to perform up to 15 hours of treatment in a single day.

Benefits of Large Volume Electrolysis

There are several benefits of large volume electrolysis. This procedure offers multiple benefits over traditional electrolysis while empowering people to let their inner beauty shine. You can experience the following benefits:

  • Needing to book fewer sessions overall (about every 10 weeks rather than every week)
  • Speeding up the transition process for transgender people
  • Experiencing less pain or discomfort with the use of sedation and numbing injections
  • Completing the process in about a year rather than two to five years for a traditional treatment
  • Requesting multiple technicians for your session or multiple sessions
  • Lowering your total treatment hours (up to 110 hours rather than 200 to 400 hours or more)

What Happens During Large Volume Electrolysis?

Like any procedure, electrolysis begins with a consultation to determine your unique hair removal needs. Your electrologist will assess your hair and skin type and discuss whether you may experience any side effects after treatment. The actual procedure involves inserting a fine probe into each hair follicle and damaging the hair root with an electric current. Then, the electrologist will remove the hair using tweezers.

Patients undergo our exclusive comfort protocol for this procedure, meaning a physician administers intravenous sedation and numbs the treatment area with local anesthetic injections for a more comfortable experience. This protocol allows your electrologist(s) to work longer and cover more of the treatment areas. While traditional electrolysis requires several small sessions, large volume treatments allow patients to see results after a single session. This comfort protocol relaxes you and eases discomfort so that you can request longer services.

Your technician will apply numbing cream to the skin about 15-30 minutes before the physician administers the IV sedation and numbing injections. If you need additional numbing medication during the session, the area can be reinjected.

Once the comfort protocol is administered, the electrologist will insert a probe into each follicle, using direct and alternating current to heat and destroy the base of the follicle. After each session, you can opt to receive treatment enhancements which aid in skin repair and reduce swelling.

How Should You Prepare for Large Volume Electrolysis?

You can easily prepare for treatment in the days leading to the surgery. Follow these preparation steps:

  • Drink about 64 ounces of water each day for five days or more before the treatment.
  • Discontinue the use of spironolactone four days prior to the procedure.
  • Avoid taking aspirin, ibuprofen or acetaminophen five days before the treatment.
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol at least 72 hours before and after treatment.
  • Exfoliate your skin gently, and apply a hydrating moisturizer multiple days before the procedure.
  • Request a pre-electrolysis facial before the treatment.
  • Shave the neck and face five to seven days before the appointment to have four to six days of facial hair growth for the procedure. Your electrologist may have specific hair growth instructions for your case.

We designed our a la carte hours to accommodate your individual facial hair removal sessions. Our experts will provide an estimate during your consultation of the time necessary to treat all or most of your facial hair during your first treatment. We’ll select the corresponding number of treatment days so that you know the approximate cost to expect. If we end up needing less time, you only pay for the hours worked (minimums apply). The number and duration of subsequent treatments can be better estimated after your initial session. Treatment enhancements such as pre- and post-treatment services are available for an additional fee.

Understanding the Importance of Skin Care for Transgender Individuals

For our transgender clients, we highly recommend a facial prior to your electrolysis treatment, as it will boost the skin’s hydration level. This is important because the electricity requires water to work, meaning the treatment will be more successful with well-hydrated skin. It also helps the skin to recover more quickly.

Physical transformation often begins with hormonal therapy. As a result, most transgender people notice significant skin quality changes. For transgender women, these changes include thinning, less oil production, softening, itchiness and sometimes pigmentation appearance (which may become permanent).

If you are doing laser or electrolysis hair removal treatments, you are affecting the oil glands. Lack of oil on the skin leads to the loss of its protective barrier and the loss of water. This may cause skin sensitivity.

For transgender men, testosterone creates an oilier canvas, which can lead to acne. Acne flares are an indication of an increase in oil production as a result of testosterone intake. Controlling the oil production and inhibiting the growth of P. acnes bacteria will be the main concerns of skin care.

Most changes in skin quality occur over a one-to-three-year period, but following a proper skin-care regimen is vital for improving your skin’s health during the transition.

We are fully aware of skin problems as a result of hormonal changes. So with our Transgender Facials, we provide customized skin care treatments that are right for you and your unique skin issues, including:

  • Exfoliation and extractions on clogged pores and/or ingrown hairs caused by folliculitis barbae.
  • High-frequency treatments.
  • Hydrating massages.
  • Calming or purifying masks.

Afterward, we will discuss the following treatment and skin care regimen to give you the best final result.
